Musselburgh Grammar School

Another long standing coaching partner has been Musselburgh Grammar School, just outside Edinburgh. 2009 saw the launch of the 4th year of coaching sessions at the school. A small but dedicated group met in the closing weeks of the year, with the next generation of potential players showing interest in joining up. The school has seen a string of players chose American Football as ‘their’ sport, going on to play in local area teams, and for two of them making the GB Lions squad for the 2010 International campaign.

Unfortunately the extreme weather and short days has lead to the sessions being suspended. With the changes at the school (see below) it may be a little difficult to get the sessions restarted in curriculum time. However, I will be returning this month to try and build new working relationships with the new staff member responsible for the extra-curricular sports work.

Huge thanks must go to the Active Schools Co-ordinator from the school, Rob Woodhouse, who has been the most effective advocate of the sport in the area. His commitments to the sport even lead him to complete the Level One coaching qualification back in 2006. Sadly he moved on at the end of the year, and I would like to publically thank him for the support and team work over the years – all the best in your future career.

  • One of the potentially largest sources for coaching is the agreement reached between TouchDown UK and the active co-ordinators in the County of Falkirk. Thanks to another ex-Edinburgh Wolves contact I have already completed 2 short lunch time clubs at small primary schools in outlying villages to Falkirk. Already another 5 schools are lining up for the New Year and the opportunity to take another kitted session in one of the local high schools.

  • A big loss for TouchDown has been the moving on of Paul Beautyman from Gilmerton New Church to the astonishingly beautiful pastures (and hills!) of Dunoon and Argyll (jealous, moi????).  Paul is one of the main reasons I do what I do, and as mentor, colleague and friend has been part of the ministry since its inception.  It still feels weird that I cant drop in on him at his office at Liberton High School and chew the fat, drink coffee and occasionally play golf with apples….it’s great fun!
