Regius Christian School

One of the least expected developments in 2009 was the offer to return to the Regius Christian School (now based in Newtongrange) and lead their young men in a 3 month rugby coaching course. Having previously run American Football classes it was return to old friends amongst the class. Although not a qualified coach, I had played in my youth and been involved with summer camp sessions over the years, as well as an (often frustrated) Scottish rugby fan over the years.

I can only say that these sessions were a real joy. The young men, ranging in ages from 8 – 12, and in experience from nothing to local junior team level, were universally enthusiastic. I was able to purchase tackle bags, balls and blocking shields with grants made by the Church of Scotland, and used them to great effect. Even the smallest and the least physically able threw themselves into the sessions, and particularly the ‘touch’ games each week.

Despite several knocks, occasional spilt blood and general all round over-enthusiasm, we all managed to survive in one piece, with a real improvement in skills and technique in all the players. To chat to their parents about the impact and pleasure they had gained in the sessions was a definite highlight of my coaching year. I certainly hope to return again in 2010.

My only regret is that I’ve had to say goodbye to 2 of the young men, as they head off to high school at the end of the spring term. Please pray for these guys as they enter the maelstrom of the mainstream having been so well cared for at Regius. Its well worth a look for parents looking for a strong, encouraging environment for their children.

  • One of the potentially largest sources for coaching is the agreement reached between TouchDown UK and the active co-ordinators in the County of Falkirk. Thanks to another ex-Edinburgh Wolves contact I have already completed 2 short lunch time clubs at small primary schools in outlying villages to Falkirk. Already another 5 schools are lining up for the New Year and the opportunity to take another kitted session in one of the local high schools.

  • A big loss for TouchDown has been the moving on of Paul Beautyman from Gilmerton New Church to the astonishingly beautiful pastures (and hills!) of Dunoon and Argyll (jealous, moi????).  Paul is one of the main reasons I do what I do, and as mentor, colleague and friend has been part of the ministry since its inception.  It still feels weird that I cant drop in on him at his office at Liberton High School and chew the fat, drink coffee and occasionally play golf with apples….it’s great fun!
